Understanding Heat Islands

Elevated temperatures increase heat-stress risks, worsen air quality, strain power grids, and deepen inequities. Hottest neighborhoods often have the least green space and the most vulnerable residents. Learn how dense surfaces store solar energy by day and release it slowly and more…

For city leaders, planners, utilities, and community groups, managing heat is thus a question of public health, energy reliability, and social resilience.

Role of Microclimate Data

Cities need information on which areas of the city are most at risk. Microclimate data: temperatures, humidity, wind, radiation, and surface characteristics measured at fine spatial and temporal scales, reveal where heat risk concentrates, when it peaks, and why specific blocks behave differently. This precision enables interventions that are targeted, cost-effective, and equitable.

The problem is that most cities:

  • Have sparse network of sensors
  • Don’t know how to interpret the data
  • Find wholesome solutions too costly

Adaptation Strategies

Once hotspots are mapped, turn adaptation into policy and projects. Build shade (trees, canopies), mandate cool/reflective, permeable surfaces in resurfacing and roofing programs, safeguard ventilation in development, retrofit public buildings and incentivize private uptake.

  • Tailored recommendations
  • Projections for both current and future scenarios
  • Support for decision making

Solution Live demo!

An interactive city map loads high-resolution microclimate layers to expose heat hotspots and peak times, explains block-level drivers, simulates interventions (trees, shade, permeable, reflective), overlays equity metrics, and outputs a ranked, costed, evidence-based action plan.

We will present a short DEMO of how you can easily use/manage the data.
