Accurate microclimate data starts with the right sensor protection. Senzemo introduces the new SMC40-OUT with improved Radiation Shield, designed to reduce solar radiation effects, improve natural airflow, and support more reliable temperature and humidity measurements in demanding outdoor environments.
In IoT deployments, imprecise data is expensive data. False heat spikes lead to premature irrigation triggers, wasted energy in cooling systems or incorrect crop protection sprayings. New SMC40-OUT was specifically created for High-Precision Measurements in harsh environments in different verticals and usecases across cities, agricultural projects, etc. With new shield that eliminates heat trapping caused by direct radiation, it ensures that sensor inputs reflect real microclimate conditions rather than localized enclosure heating. Radiation housing is designed specifically for this new Senstick SMC40-OUT microclimate sensor. It’s wider yet more enclosed geometry, expanded internal volume for natural convection and enhanced shielding against direct solar radiation and wind buffeting.
Why Reliable Microclimate Measurements Matter
From urban heat monitoring to precision agriculture, accurate environmental data is essential for making informed decisions.
Even small measurement errors can have significant consequences. Temperature readings influenced by direct sunlight may trigger unnecessary irrigation, distort urban heat assessments, or affect frost and crop disease risk predictions.
One of the most common challenges in outdoor environmental monitoring is solar radiation bias. When sunlight heats a sensor enclosure, the temperature inside can rise above the actual ambient air temperature. This can also affect relative humidity readings, resulting in data that does not accurately represent surrounding environmental conditions.
To address this challenge, Senzemo has developed the SMC40-OUT with improved MicroClimate Radiation Shield, a new protective housing designed specifically for the Senstick SMC40-OUT outdoor microclimate sensor.

The original Senstick SMC30-OUT has smaller housing and thus is more susceptible to solar radiation bias.
Introducing the SMC40: Patented Design for More Reliable Data
The SMC40-OUT builds on Senzemo’s experience with more than 5,000 sensor deployments across a wide range of outdoor environments, including urban areas, agricultural sites, and environmental monitoring projects. Its redesigned housing improves the conditions around the sensing elements by combining more effective solar radiation shielding with enhanced passive ventilation.
Unlike conventional enclosures that can retain heat around the sensor, the SMC40 features a wider, more enclosed outer structure and an expanded internal volume that encourages natural airflow. The result is reduced heat accumulation and temperature measurements that better reflect actual ambient conditions, particularly during periods of strong sunlight.
The new shield fully fits completely inside the new SMC40 sensor, making it the perfect patented design for outdoor monitoring installations.
The new shield better handles direct radiation from the sun, by having airflow gaps that allow the trapped heat to exit the shield and sensor area quicker.

The new shield fully fits completely inside the new SMC40 sensor, making it the perfect design for outdoor monitoring installations. It builds on the pre-existing SMC30 sensor which was deployed across very different environments (more than 5k deployments), but is hugely successful especially in urban microclimate cases.
The key to reliable outdoor temperature measurements is not only the sensor itself, but also the environment in which it operates.
The SMC40-OUT addresses two important factors that influence measurement quality:
Improved Solar Radiation Protection
The redesigned outer geometry provides additional protection against direct sunlight, reducing unwanted heating of the sensor and helping minimize solar radiation-induced measurement errors.
Enhanced Natural Airflow
An expanded internal space and strategically positioned ventilation gaps encourage passive air circulation around the sensing elements.
This allows accumulated heat to dissipate more effectively, limiting temperature distortion during high solar irradiance conditions.
Together, these improvements create a more stable measurement environment without relying solely on software-based corrections.
SMC30 vs. SMC40
Standard outdoor sensor enclosures often act like miniature heat traps. When direct sunlight hits a traditional housing, heat accumulates internally and becomes trapped around the sensing probe. This thermal bias inflates temperature readings and artificially lowers relative humidity data. In automated systems, even a 1°C measurement offset causes real operational inefficiencies. That triggers premature irrigation, running unnecessary cooling cycles or generating false agricultural risk alerts that waste valuable resources and increase operational costs.

The SMC40 Radiation Shield resolves these physical measurement errors through clever structural airflow engineering:
Sun-Blocking Architecture: The expanded outer geometry completely eliminates direct solar exposure on the sensor while keeping it stable during severe wind conditions.
Passive Natural Convection: Expanded internal space creates continuous airflow around the sensor probe, preventing heat buildup even on high-irradiance summer days.
For Smarter Cities and Urban Heat Monitoring
Better environmental data for more effective urban management.
Cities rely on microclimate monitoring to understand urban heat islands, evaluate green infrastructure, and optimize public space management.
Senzemo’s experience with projects in Coburg, Parramatta, and Sydney Olympic Park demonstrates how environmental monitoring can support more informed approaches to urban cooling, irrigation, and climate adaptation.
Reliable measurements help city authorities distinguish actual changes in local conditions from sensor-related temperature distortion.
This supports more confident decisions about water management, infrastructure planning, and investments in urban resilience.
CASES: Coburg, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park
The Cost of Over-Irrigation: How Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park use precise microclimate data to optimize cooling and water management, saving 5 million AUD per year and cutting irrigation costs by 83%.
Resource Efficiency: Preventing unnecessary maintenance dispatch calls and sub-contracted management fees through verified baseline data.
Urban Heat Island Mitigation: Reliable data for municipal authorities, city managers and urban planners managing public assets, electricity grids and roads.

Precision Agriculture and Crop Protection
More representative field conditions for better agricultural decisions.
In agriculture, small changes in temperature and humidity can influence irrigation schedules, frost protection, and disease forecasting.
In vineyards and other sensitive agricultural environments, inaccurate measurements can lead to unnecessary interventions or delayed responses to changing weather conditions.
The SMC40 helps improve the quality of the data used to assess local growing conditions, allowing farmers and agricultural technology providers to make more informed decisions about when and where action is needed.
Senzemo’s experience with Doppler Winery, VARCITIES, and frost protection applications highlights the importance of reliable, location-specific environmental monitoring.
CASES: Doppler Winery, VARCITIES, Frost Protection
Avoiding Crop Loss: In vineyards or frost-prone regions, a 0.5°C inaccuracy can mean the difference between timely frost intervention and crop destruction.
Resource Optimization: Save thousands in pesticides and water by spraying only when real microclimate thresholds are met.
